Black marks, grey staining and darkened edges can indicate that water has sat in the timber long enough to react with natural tannins or metal fasteners. Minor surface discolouration may sand out during refinishing. Deep black staining can remain within the wood and may require board replacement, a darker stain choice or a carefully planned repair that blends with the surrounding floor.
